Summer is a time for ice cream, BBQs and finger sandwiches served straight from a picnic basket. But in between all the indulgent stuff it’s good to eat healthy. The sunny months of the year are a great time for enjoying seasonal fruit and vegetables that come under the label of ‘superfoods’.
We’ve picked out five that are ripe, fresh and ready for eating. Pack some of these beauties into your diet and enjoy the health benefits that follow.

Asparagus: throw some delicious asparagus tips into your dish for a low calorie, vitamin rich treat. They’re good for your digestive health, can reduce blood pressure and help prevent heart disease. What’s not to like?
Lemons: come ready made with high levels of vitamin C which is a powerful antioxidant. They also could help to relieve asthma symptoms and protect against cancer. Another reason they’re great for summer – they can prevent your skin from getting old and wrinkly in the sun.
Spinach: Popeye’s favourite promises to make you just as strong as the man himself. With loads of iron it can help fight fatigue as well as other great properties that lower blood pressure and keep you bones nice and strong. We recommend it fresh, in a salad.
Watermelon: is a great thirst quencher, a healthy dessert and is full of nutrients that do good things to your body. Even better, it’s absolutely delicious.
Strawberries: aren’t just for Wimbledon. They’re a great source of fibre, can aid healthy eyesight, lower blood pressure and treat arthritis amongst other things. Grab yourself a punnet of them now. Go easy on the cream.
