CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW AT HOME
Posted 5 May 2016 by The Saucy Fish Co.We love experimenting with herbs here at Saucy HQ so with the RHS Chelsea Flower Show taking place this month, we thought we’d bring you our top tips for growing herbs at home.
KNOW YOUR SEASON: like all plants, different herbs grow in different seasons, this is especially important if you’re planning to grow al fresco. Summer is particularly popular in the herb world, with most plants being at their best June-August, whereas the winter growing is restricted to herbs such as parsley and savory.
H₂0 SO IMPORTANT: make sure you’re watering your herbs on a regular basis to keep them fresh. But don’t get too carried away with that watering can, it’s very easy to drown herbs, which leads us nicely to our next point...
CONSIDER DRAINAGE: avoid any drowning fatalities by purchasing compost that’s specially adapted for potted plants, to allow water to drain.
LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION: herbs need light to thrive, so if you’re growing indoors make sure you place your pots are on a sunny windowsill.
PRUNE!: No we’re not talking about a dried up, wrinkly plum, we’re talking pruning. Give your plants a good trim on a regular basis to keep them fresh and to stop unwanted flowers form sprouting.
TRIAL AND ERROR: unless you were born with natural green fingers chances are you will face some disasters along you’re herb-growing journey. But don’t give up, persevere with the potting and you’ll be a herb hero in no time.
