BE OUR GUEST... GINGEY BITES TURNS PESCETARIAN FOR JANUARYPosted 11 February 2016 by The Saucy Fish Co.
January - a fresh start and a chance to distance yourself from the pure indulgence of December.
Did you rush out to join the gym or take a drastic decision to turn vegan/ give up alcohol / run 500 miles to work every morning - only to find that less than a week later you’re flagging already? I used to be one of those people but this year I gave it some thought and chose to make a smaller change, something achievable. So, I spent the whole of January following a pescatarian diet, that is, a diet which excludes animal products and is made up of mainly vegetables, fish and seafood.
The benefits are huge; fish is incredibly good for you - full of omega-3 fatty acids which are good for your heart, plus protein, calcium and vitamin D. The NHS actually advocates eating at least two portions of fish a week too. A target I don't think I’ve ever achieved before now.
I do actually really enjoy eating fish but hardly ever cook it at home. Before my pescatarian challenge I definitely wasn’t eating two portions a week either. Now that the month is over, I’m confident that I’ll eat more of it in the future. Initially I found it easy, novel almost but as the month progressed, things were hard at times. It’s easy to follow a set diet when you’re out in restaurants because you can just select something from the menu but at home, things are harder. That’s where The Saucy Fish Co. products come in. I tried a range of them to try during the month and honestly found them so easy to use and with no need to worry about bones or mess.
The Foil Bake Bag range is particularly good as products have a sauce already paired with the fish all within a bag! Just add some new potatoes and a big salad and you’ve got a healthy meal in less than half an hour! At risk of sounding like an evangelist (or worse - someone being paid to say something is good), I did genuinely find the products incredible easy to use. The Roasted Sicilian Lemon and Dill Salmon from Saucy’s Ready to Eat range was my absolute favourite and will be purchased again in the near future.
So, finally, February is here and my self-made challenge is complete. As I look back at it, the one thing I’d say I’ve learnt is this - everything in moderation. As humans we are designed to eat plants, fish and meat. And for me, that’s the best way forward. Turning pescatarian has meant that I’ve eaten more fish than ever before and even though meat will remain a part of my diet, from now on I can wholeheartedly say I will definitely eat more fish than I did before.
