THERE ARE DEFINITELY MORE FISH IN THE SEA!Posted 3 March 2016 by The Saucy Fish Co.
I have spent the last 9 months on a culinary adventure! For most of my life I have been a fulltime meat eater, but after a meeting with a dodgy BBQ last summer, my life changed when I decided I could no longer face eating meat anymore. Fast forward 9 months and I am a fulltime pescatarian, creating, tasting and learning about all that the oceans and rivers can give us.
Here are my top 3 tips on enjoying a more fish based way of life:
1) Variety is the spice of life! There are definitely more fish in the sea, and it more accessible than ever. Never tried sea bass before? Why not try The Saucy Fish Co.’s Seabass with Beurre Blanc Dressing. A simple introduction to something more exotic than your plain old fish and chip dinner; there’s an ocean of great options available to you and at reasonable prices.
One of my favourite fish for versatility and price is the humble pollock, it is so cheap I can really experiment with it. I love coating it in yogurt and tikka spices, baking it in the oven and having it in a chapati with a side of bombay potatoes. The ultimate comfort food.
2) It really does make your eyes sparkle and hair shiny! Your body is only going to reward you when you fill it full of omega, and one of the best ways to do this is through oily fish. I absolutely love pairing fresh mackerel with in season roasted beetroot. If you can’t find fresh mackerel fillets, why not try equally omega packed fresh Salmon with Tomato and Chilli Chutney with new potatoes and plenty of fresh green vegetables. It might not be 100% proven to make your hair shiny, but it will definitely make your tummy full!
3) You will learn to love cooking all over again. I am never out of the kitchen. If for a brief moment I am, my head is usually in a cookbook, food magazine or scouring the internet for inspiration. All of this cumulates in creating great recipes (which you can visit on my site www.beingpescatarian.com ), great opinion and of course the obligatory food snap! In the last 9 months I have found a passion for great food that is not only good for the body, but good for the mind and soul.
I have had the pleasure of discussing my food journey with fellow fish lovers and pescatrarians and hopefully inspiring people to not shy away from cooking and creating great meals with fish, but also enjoying it. I may never go back to my meat eating ways, but for you avid carnivores out there, I lay down the gauntlet of trying one fish based meal a week. Even if you are not the most confident cook, The Saucy Fish Co.’s Foil Bake Bags offer the ideal opportunity to try something new, without the pressure.
